The Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology is a research hospital concentrating healthcare, research, and education of pediatric cancer in a single location in Utrecht. The institute aims to provide the highest level of care for all children with cancer and has the ambition to cure all children of cancer and improve quality of life. The center brings together the best possible care and scientific research, creating a unique interdisciplinary institute for pediatric oncology in Europe.

Research project

Hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) is a life-saving therapy for various diseases, including leukemia. However, despite its use in >40.000 patients annually, the mechanisms by which transplanted stem cells regenerate blood in the recipient remain largely unknown. In a previous study, we found that clonal populations of mutant stem cells (clonal hematopoiesis) can be found in a substantial number of long-term stem cell transplantation survivors. In the current project, we aim to dissect the growth dynamics of mutant clones after transplantation, and to identify cell-extrinsic factors that drive or mitigate clonal expansion, which may provide therapeutic targets. You will be involved in the entire scope of translational research – from patient recruitment to fundamental cell biology studies. You will assess clinical parameters, blood cell counts as well as molecular characteristics of these cells, and relate these to clinical exposures and outcome. You will coordinate study visits, analyze the clinical data and perform the required wet-lab experiments. You will work closely together with another PhD student, a clinical trial manager and a wet-lab technician. Within the context of the study, you are encouraged to develop and test your own research hypotheses and ideas.

This is a 4-year project that is subsidized by NWO. The results of this study are expected to contribute to more effective, safer stem cell transplantations, in order to improve the survival and quality of life of children with cancer.

Profile

We are looking for an enthusiastic, curious MD-PhD candidate who is eager to learn, has good organizational skills and excellent communication skills. You are creative and think out-of-the box. You have a mind of your own. You enjoy patient contact, and have affinity/experience in fundamental research. You work well in a dynamic environment. You enjoy collaborating with people from various disciplines: (trial) nurses, hemato-oncologists, researchers, and patients.

Qualifications

  • MD degree
  • Excellence in the Dutch language, required for patient recruitment
  • Demonstrated experience in research
  • Interest in translational childhood cancer research
  • Advanced in English speaking and writing
  • You enjoy working in and contributing to a multidisciplinary team
  • You have a creative mind, and you like to contribute to the development of our research group

Our job offer

We offer a challenging position in an international, multidisciplinary research environment, which combines clinical studies, stem cell biology and genomics. You will start on a temporary position for the duration of one year, with the possibility to extend upon satisfaction. Your gross monthly salary will start in FWG 50-6 with a salary of €4.015,- gross a month for a fulltime working week (36 hours). You also receive 8,33% holiday allowance and 8,33 % end-of-year bonus. The Princess Máxima Center operates according to the collective labor agreement ‘cao ziekenhuizen’.

The Belderbos Group

The Belderbos lab was established in 2020 and focuses on translational hematopoietic stem cell biology. Our overall mission is to unravel the basic mechanisms by which human hematopoietic stem cells (re-)generate blood, and to translate this knowledge into therapies to improve hematopoiesis in children with intrinsic or acquired bone marrow failure, or in those undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. To achieve this mission, we apply single-cell technologies and in vitro assays to samples of pediatric patients. Our team currently consists of two postdocs, three PhD students, two wet-lab technicians and a bioinformatician. We collaborate closely with pediatric oncologists, stem cell transplant physicians and several other research groups, both within the Princess Máxima Center and (inter-)nationally. Core values in our group are collaboration, curiosity and clinical impact. The culture within our group is aimed at supporting each other, so that each team member can optimally use their talent to achieve the best possible results. As a MD/PhD student, you will collaborate directly with the PI and another PhD student, on an NWO-funded translational project which aims to identify cell-extrinsic exposures that drive the expansion of mutant hematopoietic stem cells in pediatric transplantation recipients.
